I love hawker stalls and street food... but sometimes I dread the fact that in order to enjoy authentic hawker food I have to put up with the hot and humid Malaysian weather since most hawker stalls are out in the open or in coffee shops aka kopitiams (local styled restaurants) with no air conditioning. So hotttt...
SO, when I found out that right in the heart of Bukit Bintang, located at the basement level of Lot 10 Shopping Mall is an entire food village which comprises of some of the most popular hawker stalls in Kuala Lumpur.. all under one FULLY AIR-CONDITIONED roof... hallelujah!! Not only do I get to enjoy my hawker styled street food favorites, but I also get to enjoy them in the air-conditioned comfort of being inside a shopping mall!
Plus, there were so much to choose from. It took me forever to walk around Heritage Food Village and slowly absorb all the information on the food on offer. One minute I thought chicken rice would be lovely. Another minute I got swayed by the thought of freshly cooked beef noodles. Then I see the beautifully cooked BBQ duck and Crispy Roast Pork just hanging there waiting to be devoured... aaahhhh decisions decisions, choices choices!
So in the end, I've settled for the Braised Pork served with Rice and Oyster Cooked Veggies... couldn't resist the aroma of braised pork nor ignore the soft texture the pork belly presented.
It was a truly delightful meal.. the pork was melt in your mouth and the veggies just freshly blanched so it retains most of its flavor and texture. Even as I sit here writing this post my stomach is grumbling in protest... WHY Kim do you torture yourself with the thought of food now 6,400km away???
Then my sister went and bought a bowl of "Tau Fu Fa" which a very soft tofu pudding with a sugar syrup. Ohh how I love the Tau Fu Fa... love the soft texture of the tofu and the sweetness of the syrup together. YUM!
A few days later we actually went back to Heritage Food Village for lunch (mostly due to the convenience just minutes walk from our hotel) and I finally got my Chicken Rice fix. To top it off I ordered the steamed chicken with some "char siu" aka Honey BBQ Pork. Nothing beats authentic Chicken Rice in Malaysia. The steamed chicken never disappoints, always really soft and tender and moist. Sometimes in Melbourne you'd still get some pretty dodgy Chicken Rice with no flavor and dried chicken. Never happens in Malaysia, not that I've ever experienced anyway!
So there's a place to keep in mind the next time you're in KL and staying within the Golden Triangle - super convenient, plenty of choices, authentic hawker food and most importantly, AIR CONDITIONED!!
